about the artist

Kristen Maize was born and raised on the island of St. John, US Virgin Islands - a life spent on the water and immersed in tropical surroundings.  After attending college in San Diego (formal art direction was from the art department at the University of San Diego), she returned home and worked in the science field, dedicating much of her time to her passion for painting.

After earning a graduate degree in coastal environmental management from Duke University, Kristen traveled to Hawaii to to paint, surf, and work in the environmental field. She currently lives in Honolulu and works for The Nature Conservancy.

Island culture, exquisite landscapes, and the marine environment continue to influence Kristen's work, everything from color choice to subject matter.  Working predominately with oils, Kristen paints from her studio inspired mainly by photos and memories.  While her paintings focus on a variety of subjects, her dedication to visual imagery and color can be seen in her work.

Kristen’s artwork can be viewed at Bajo El Sol Gallery in St. John and Mango Tango Gallery in St. Thomas, USVI.
